Test and Evaluation Work Unit

The Test and Evaluation work unit collects essential data sets, develops model validation tools, and applies these tools to quantitatively evaluate MORPHOS performance in a test bed environment. Performance and diagnostics feedback is provided back to model developers to facilitate continued model development.

MORPHOS Instrumented Test Bed Concept
Modeling studies typically require many simulations to fully explore output sensitivity to a variety of controlled inputs, source-term settings, grid resolutions, etc. This is often a difficult task due to lack of adequate validation data; disparate data formats; and the need for established standards, metrics and tools for quantifying prediction error. To address these issues, the Test and Evaluation Work Unit strives to:

(1) collect critical data sets necessary advance model development and evaluation, and (2) provide a test bed environment for the assessment of model performance against both known standards and challenging real-world scenarios. The MORPHOS test bed links model output with historical data through robust statistical tools such as the Interactive Model Evaluation and Diagnostics System (IMEDS) for winds, waves and water levels; and the Coastal Morphology toolbox (CMorph) for morphologic evolutions. Both of these tools provide an in-depth error analysis and performance assessment of model results to facilitate continued model improvements.
