    Sediment Tracer

    Under the FY02 scope of work, sediment tracer was manufactured and delivered to the site. Subtasks under Task 2 for FY03 include deployment of the sediment tracer, sediment sampling, and sediment analysis

    Deployment of sediment tracer.
    Sediment tracer manufactured under the FY02 scope of work will be prepared for deployment in FY03. Preparation of the sediment tracer will follow protocol developed by Environmental Tracing Systems (ETS) and the tracer will be seeded within or near Site C and at the Jekyll Nearshore Area.

    Sediment sampling and analysis.
    For sediment tracer studies and other analyses, periodic sampling with surface grab samples, and sediment cores is required. For the sediment tracer study, approximately 150-200 surface grab samples will be collected to quantify the background flourescence of the native sediment followed by four sampling campaigns (of approximately 200 samples each) at 2-3 month intervals to define movement of the sediment tracer. The surface sampling methods will follow established ETS protocol.  Spatial distribution of the sediment samples will include areas surrounding the disposal site, over the ebb shoal fronting Jekyll Island, and from the mid-tide beach along the Jekyll Island shoreline.  The surface grab samples from one sampling campaign will be analyzed for sediment grain size distribution, and the samples from all sampling campaigns will be analyzed for flourescent tracer content.  During the surface sampling campaigns, shallow (50-100 cm) sediment cores will also be extracted from dredged material mounds at Site C and the Jekyll Nearshore area to provide bulk density (for cohesive layers) and sediment grain-size distribution data as a function of depth below the sediment surface. Approximately 30 cores are required with 5‑cm vertical resolution of sediment parameters.
